Eustace on the Trail

Gilbert describes the way Eustace Conway feels upon his discovery of his survival of the Appalachian Trail. He feels, "like a man who has walked away from a firing squad whos guns have been jammed, and he's checking himself for bullet holes- and there are none." When one undergoes a religious conversion it is either by choice or a peer descision. When the descision is made by choice they under go a change. Religion is what you believe is true and it contains your most valuable posession, your values. If you are changing religion, if because of a burden or some sort of pressure on yourself, you feel a great relief from all that force. You alo have a new feeling of happiness and freedom. Gilberts says, "He's humbled and exalted and simplified and purified and saved by this moment." Conway has the feeling of a person who has just changed religions. Elizabeth Gilbert depicks this feeling very well through her writting.
