Fertility

What conditions enable fertility? a drought or place that is dry and has no water. The conditions have to be lacking certain nutrients in order to grow and create new life.

What conditions impede fertility? Death, desease or just an innability to reproduce. No rain.

What might it mean for a country or culture to be fertile? It could mean that they are stable and running and creating new life while progressing as the future arrives.

Cite an example of a fertile social group in the world today and an infertile one. World Vision sets up water supplies in africa for people who don't have them. An infertile group would be PITA, who stops the killing of animals. they are just trying to stop things from progressing the way they should.

Alone

1. A good title for this chapter would be "Alone." Simply because this is how the story ends. Gatsby has been killed, Daisy and Tom move without leaving an adress and Nick and Jordan Baker break off their relationship. Also barley anyone comes to Gatsby's funeral. At the end of the story in this chapter Nick lays on the beach and thinks about Americans and the American Dream. On that beach I think he realizes that in reality, we are all alone.

2. Two years after the incident, Nick desides to write about Gatsby's funeral in which he tried to invite many people but he only got the responses that they had moved, as Daisy and Tom had done, or that they just simply didn't want to come. Mr. Gatz, Gatsby's father comes to the funeral and shows Nick a book that he had written in as a child that had Gatsby's goals in it. Nick desides to move to the midwest and before he leaves, sees Tom and talks about Gatsby's death, which by the end of the conversation Nick desides that he doesn't like Daisy or Tom because they are simply rich snobs expect that money gives them the right to have others pick up after them. At the end of the story Nick lies and Gatsby's beach and think about the early Americans and how our green land was equivilent to Gatsby and Daisy's green light.

3. "After that, my own rule is to let everything alone." I think taht this quote best decribes this chapter because in the ned, no one made a big deal out of anything. The whole situation isn't looked that big upon except by reporters. It is let alone. The significance of it is that Nick, when he lays on the beach at the end, seems to let everything go and just move on. He has new views if things and he's moving away.

A. Nick developes majorly in this chapter. He goes from a state of nothing, to a state of knowing. He learns that he doesn't like people who are like Daisy and Tom. They are rich and snobby and he detest that. He also learns that he doesn't like the east. The east is grotest while the west and midwest are home and beautiful. I feel as if Nick has a sense of understanding by the end of the book, which I think was his purpose of writing it.

A Sense of Edginess and Death

1. I think that a good title for chapter 8 would be "A Sense of Edginess and Death." It suites the chapter because Nick can't seem to concentrate throughout his day at work and Gatsby is shot. Wilson, after seeing the eyes of T.J. wants revenge. The characters in chapter 8 all seem out of line and disturbed.

2. Nick goes to Gatsby's after Gatsby arrives home at 4 am and informs Nick that nothing happened with Tom and Daisy. Nick finally goes to work and Gatsby descides taht he wants to go for a swim for the first time in his marble swimming pool. All the while WIlson talks to Michaelis and after seeing the eyes of T.J. says that God sees everything and that he should have revenge. Wilson goes to Tom and gets information that Gatsby killed Myrtle, so he goes to Gatsby's where he shoots him then he shoots himself.

3. "Standing behind him, Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, which had just emerged, pale and enormous, from the dissolving night." I think that this is a very important quote from this chapter because it comes from the conversation between Michaelis and Wilson that God sees everything. These doctor eyes see everything. They know everything that happens in their range of sight. In CHapter 8 the reader learns many truths, as do the characters. The eyes represent what the characters have failed to see. Gatsby didn't see that he was going to get shot and neither did anyone else. Tom didn't see Myrtle get killed so he assumed that Gatsby did it.

A. I see Nick develope as a character in chapter 8. Throughout the story Nick is a very laid back character. He just doesn't seem to care, but he does. In this chapter Nick is concerned about Gatsby because he goes to his house as soon as Gatsby gets home. That day Nick doesn't want to go to work because he just wants to sit and talk to Gatsby. Nick turns out to be very uneasy in this chapter. I mean he turns down a date with Jordan Baker and is deep in curious thought through out his whole day.

The Great Gatsby Chapter 7

A Deathly Truth

1. I think that a good title for Chapter 7 would be "A Deathly Truth." Simply because this chapter is all about revealing the truth, and a consequence of revealing these truths is a death. Also the truths that are discovered in chapter seven turn a suposed to be happy lunchin into a fighting, emotional, jumbled up mess.

2. Nick has not seen Gatsby for awhile and begins to worry about him until meeting him one day to go to the Buchanan's. It is a pleasant meeting with the Buchanans and Jordan at first, but Nick sees that Tom is aware of Daisy ad Gatsby's admiration to eachother and he begins to watch them carefully. Upon leaving to go to town in two seperate cars, Tom driving Gatsby's, they stop to get gas at the Wilsons, where Nick notices Myrtle looking out a top window green with envy over Jordan who she assumes is Tom's wife. The group continues to their destination at the Plaza, where Tom arrises the concern that Gatsby is sleeping with his wife, which upsets Gatsby causing him to tell Tom that Daisy never loved him which causes the whole party to leave and Daisy inadvertently hits Myrtle with Gatsby's car on the way home and kills her.

3. I think a good quote from this chapter is " His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and isolate, were slipping precipitately from his control." (page 125) This quote describes what has happened to Tom in chapter 7. He basically looses everything he has ever charished. He is told by Gatsby that Daisy has never loved him and that she is leaving him, and his mistress Myrtle is killed by Daisy. The quote describes how things can change in a matter of minutes. In this chapter, the whole book turns around. I guess the only accurate and exceptable word for chapter 7 is crazy! It is a downhill fall.

A. I really see Daisy develop as a character in chapter 7. From what I have read, Daisy seems to be a very soft, kind person. But she has all of this frustration inside of her. She loves Gatsby. There is a quote that says "Her voice is full of money." This quote talks about how she isn't satisfied wth what she has because she is seeking something else. That other thing is GAtsby. After the meeting in Plaza when she has a melt down because she is being forced to say stuff she drives away with Gatsby. But on the way home she hits Myrtle! I think that Daisy has gone a little mad because it wasn't an accident. The text says, "Well first Daisy turned away from the woman toward the other car, and then she lost her nerve and turned back." This proves that she did it on purpose. Daisy knew all along who his mistress was and she was getting even. I see her as a sort of vingful character after chapter 7.

The Great Gatsby Chapter 6

Mandy Holcomb

Mr. Copeland

English 11 CP

26 January 2010

1. I think that a good title for chapter 6 would be "Two Truths and a Lie." I think it suites this chapter because the reader learns that many of the rumors or stories about Gatsby are not true. The reader learns the truth. ANother truth is that Gatsby's company that he keeps is not very pleasant. This is proven through Daisy and Nick at Gatsby's party. Neither of them have a good time and both are mostly repulsed in the people there. I think that Gatsby is aware of this discomfort. He notices that Daisy had a bad time. The reader sees a lie at the end of the chapter when the narrator, or Nick, tells the reader that all of Gatsby's dreams of Daisy from his earlier thoughts and life have now simmered down to something simple and not as enchanting as before. All of his visions were a lie it seems. They were all fiction versus reality, where reality is the prominant one.

2. The reader learns that Gatsby's original named was James Gatz, which was changed to Jay Gatsby by Dan Cody while working on a yacht with him. Gatsby learns a lot and inherits 25,000 after Dan dies, at this point Gatsby has chosen to go out and make lots of money and be a sucessful man. One day Nick travels over to Gatsby's where he finds Tom with Mr. and Mrs. Sloane after having taken a horseback ride. That night Gatsby has another party in which Daisy and Tom attend and they four, Nick, Gatsby, Daisy and Tom all have a bad time because Nick doesn't like the company, nor do Daisy and Tom, and Gatsby is upset because Daisy had a poor time and his vision of her isn't as extravegant as it was before that night.

3. "Can't repeat the past?...... Why of course you can!" Gatsby says this in response to Nick. I think that it is very important because this quote explains everything that he wants to do with Daisy. He wants to go back to how things used to be before he left for war and Tom came around. He also wants that strong emotion of picture of Daisy that he loved so much. Gatsby felt as if he lost that but if he could just repeat the past it would all be ok.

A. I see Tom progress as a character in Chapter 6. Tom now knows, upon visiting Gatsby one evening with the Sloanes, that Daisy has been conversing with Gatsby. He also doesn't seem to really Gatsby. At Gatsby's party Tom keeps after Daisy more than he usually does because he is suspitious of her. It's as if he can dish it out, but he can't take it. Tom cheats on his wife all the time, but then Tom gets suspicious when it seems as if Daisy was reconecting with Gatsby.

Reunited

1. I think that a good title for chapter five would be "Reunited." It's simple I know, but it defines the very point of this chapter. Gatsby is reunited once again, after five years apart, with Daisy Buchanan. He is also reunited with the way he feels about her. When their eyes meet at Nick's apartment their hearts blaze and their feelings for each other ignite and their feelings reunite. They make connections like the fact that his house is the HUGE mansion and that the green light Gatsby stares at is the light on the end of Daisy's pere. They make connections, but mostly they reunite as friends and as lovers.

2. Nick returns home from a date with Jordan to find Gatsby's house all lit up and him standing in the yard asking when a good time to have tea with Daisy might be. The next day, after having his lawn mowed, Gatsby gets the butterflies as he awates Daisy's apperence. She arrives and they are reaquanted with love and tears and conversation. After a tour of Gatsby's house and listening to the piano, Daisy and Gatsby's emotion flare up and Nick leaves them alone together in Gatsby's house.

3. " He has passed visibly through two states and was entering upon a third. After his embarrassment and his unreasoning joy he was consumed with wonder at her presence." I think this is an important quote because it shows the reader was kind of feeling Gatsby has towards Daisy. He has gone through three states, according to Nick, and they have all overcome him and taken over his entire being. This whole chapter focuses in on Daisy and Gatsby and their affection for each other. Daisy is married so the reader mainly focuses in on Gatsby. All of these three states are good ones and the reader can tell that Gatsby is undoubtably head over heels in love for Daisy.

A. The reader sees Daisy Buchanan develop as a character in chapter five. She arrives at Nick's place and is extremely happy and excited. Then she sees Gatsby and goes into kind of a trance. She turns into an emotional wreck and the reader can see that she's not fully exposed yet. There is still alot that she is hiding or bottling up inside. You can tell because it is urging to find a way out. She crys when they talk and when Gatsby goes through his clothes. But yet she is still overwhelmed with happiness. Daisy sees the very beautiful aspects of like like the pink clouds towards the end of the chapter. But the way that she acts around Gatsby clearly shows that she has a paaion of some sort for him. I am interested to find out more about Daisy.

The Great Gatsby Chapter 4

Underground Knowledge
1. I think a good title for chaper four would be "Underground Knowledge." Throughout chapter four the reader is informed about many "secretive" things that the character's hold. Nick learns that Gatsby is in love with Daisy and he also finds that Gatsby is friends with a person who supposedly rigged the 1919 world series. Undeground knowledge stands for the secrets and plans held this chapter like the plan to have Daisy for tea through Nick, just so Gatsby can be reaquanted with her. Also the character Nick, or the narrator, isn't quite sure about Gatsby's background. He doesn't know what to believe and what to not believe. It is all very mysterious and secret to him.
2. Informing Nick about his wealth and life experiences Gatsby takes Nick to lunch in the city and meets up with Meyer Wolfshiem who apparently rigged the 1919 World Series. Later Nick is aquanted with Jordan Baker who informs him of the desire Gatsby has for Daisy. She tells Nick the story, or background, of Daisy and how she fell in love with Jay but married Tom after he left for the war and remained loyal to him throughout their marriage. Jordan finally comes to tell Nick that Gatsby has asked Jordan to ask Nick if he will invite Daisy to tea at his house, where Gatsby will make an appearence and they will meet again.
3. "The officer looked at Daisy while she was speaking, in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at some time, and because it seemed so romantic to me I have remembered the incident ever since." I think that this quote is the most imporatant in this chapter because it sums up the main point of it. Gatsby is in love with Daisy. And in my oppinion, a woman can usually tell if he loves you by the way that he looks at you. Jordan obviously noticed the way Gatsby looked at Daisy. She saw that they were in love which is why she knows that he moved to West Egg to be closer to her. Jordan never forgot the incident because she knows that Daisy didn't marry the one she truly loved. And I think that this book is going to transform into a big love story. That one quote says it all.
A. Gatsby developes a lot as a character in chapter four. The reader finds out more about him. They find out that he inherited his money after all his family in San Fransico died. He went to Oxford and recieved medels in ww1. We also learn that he collected jewls in the capital of Europe. But the main thing that the reader learns about Gatsby is that he's in love with Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby, in this chapter, is seen as more sensitive and smart. He has accomplished many things and is this great wealthy person who has everything, except on ething. And that one thing is his love Daisy. So the reader sees that Gatsby has authority and has everything, but yet he is still incomplete and unhappy in a way.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 3

Mandy Holcomb

Mr. Copeland

English 11 CP

20 January 2010

A Confusion with Laughter
1. I think a good title for this chapter would be "A Confusion With Laughter." It describes the chapter because Nick goes to another party but this one is at Gatby's mansion. Nick describes the night with thorough detail stating that the evening was filled with much laughter. Nick also finds himself talking to a man that he has no idea is Gatsby. Nick is confused in this chapter with Jordan also. He thinks that he loves her sometimes. So I think Nick is a very confused character in this chapter, but is filled with laughter at the party.
2. Gatsby is widley known for his elaborate partys in which Nick is asked to attend one. The party is huge as guest woe over Gatsby's riches, and Nick runs into Jordan Baker. After searching for Gatsby, but finding a drunk man in his library instead, Nick has a conversation with a handsome man, named Jay Gatsby, who has seen Nick before. Afer leaving the party and seeing Owl Eyes in a ditch on the side of the road, Nick explains that his life isn't just going to partys, but he works in the city and has become quite fond of Jordan Baker and her dishonesty.
3. "Absolutely real- have pages and everything. I thought they'd be a nice durable cardboard." (page 45) I thought that this quote was interesting because this random guy who is in Gatsby's library is looking at his many books and expects them all to be fake. But no, he finds that they are all real. I thought it remarkable that Gatsby has all these thousands of books that he has probably read. In this chapter is see Gatsby as a very classy smart man. And i see this drunk guy as a guy who thinks Gatsby isn't smart and that he doesnt deserve to be rich.
A. I see character developement in Jordan Baker. She shows up at this party and the reader learns a little but more about her. I learned that she is close to Gatsby in some way because he leaves to talk to her alone for an hour. The reader also learns that Jordan attracts Nick in some way and she is a very dishonest person.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 2

Mandy Holcomb

Mr. Copeland

English 11 CP

Dusty Eyes See Pictured Greetings
1. "Dusty Eyes See Pictured Greetings" This is my title for chapter two. I think that the title reflects the main idea of the story in that everything Nick sees appears to be covered in dust from the city. But also he is meeting all these people and studying their actions by kind of being the third wheel. He sees all of them as he would a picture. But its also a blur to him because he is drunk, and that explains the dusty eyes. In this chapter there are also a lot of rephrenses to eyes and blindness.
2. Nick journeys through the dusty feilds outside New York to meet Tom's girl. While being watched by two blue avertizement eyes Nick, Tom and Myrtle escape to the city together to go to Myrtle's sister's apartment. Nick meets a couple by the name of McKee and and Myrtle's sister Catherine, all the while being drunk off of whisky for the second time in his life. Being repulsed by the behavior of his aquantinces, after Tom brutaly breaks Mrytle's nose, he escorts himself out of the apartment with Mr. McKee and waits for the 4 am train back to West Egg.
3. "Well, they say he's a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm's. That's where all his money comes from." (page 32) I think that this quote is significant because this is a small moment of conversation between Nick and Catherine where Nick gets a chance to learn a little about his mysterious neighbor. This quote shows that Gatsby comes from old money thats inherited. I think this will be more significant as the story progresses.
A. Nick is a very interesting character. To me, he comes off as quiet. He kind of keeps to himself and seems to think about things a lot. I think that he sees more than most people around him do. In chapter one the reader sees Nick as a lonley character. In chapter two the Nick is introduced to new people, none of which he is fond of. He sits in this apartment observing the action of people all the while being drunk. But he still remains the same. He observes and thinks about everything. He then ends up returning home early in the morning. The thing is is that i think he wants to be lonley. Because after meeting all these people he still returns home alone. Nick is a lonley character.
